I just bought the 6.0 Firefly. This seems like a really good quality wing so far. The boom on the Firefly is awesome! The pistol grip is great for handling and maneuverability. I love the SUP valves and the bright colour. It has a really good wrist leash and the windows are very clear for seeing through and the opening in the centre strut area allows you to see through the windows even better. I was hoping this would be a good wing for me in light wind but it seems like it’s a little lacking in grunt and back hand pump ability but we’ll see how it is in different conditions. So far it seems to perform great with enough wind and I love how lightweight it is. It flies effortlessly and is really easy to handle. Great wing. I’m anxious to get out for the next session!
I have the 5.0 and 4.0 sizes of the Firefly and I've finally had enough sessions in various conditions to give an honest review.
First, the construction: these are well built wings with no fancy materials so repairs won't be a nightmare. The valves are high-pressure Halkey Roberts valves that are standard on most inflatable SUPs and boats. These valves are very reliable and easy to use. The wings have windows if you're sailing in a crowded place, and they come in a bright color so other sailors and airplanes don't fly into you! The only downside to the color is your buddies won't know what size you're on since they are all the same color.
Second, the boom: if you don't want a boom then don't try these wings because once you use the boom you won't go back to handles. Manouvers are much easier with the boom. The only downside is the boom allows you to compensate for suboptimal technique! Also, they pack into a cylindrical bag much like a windsurf sail due to the boom so they are not as compact in you vehicle.
Technically the boom is not removable but I popped off the foam endcaps that are glued on and each end of the boom is held on with two hex head machine screws. So the boom can be removed for travel if necessary. I reapplied the end caps with internal velcro so they are removable and look original.
Third, the performance: these wings have a huge range, they feel fast, and they seem to fly upwind very well. Flagging on waves was not a problem despite the "heavy" boom and I am comparing them to the F-One Strikes which are amazing for flagging.
Fourth, the price: I don't know how Silent Sports does it but their prices are amazing. They are selling these wings for just slightly more than used wings! Crazy good value for the money!
